It is believed that economic kidnapping is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world, generating an estimated $500m each year in ransom payments. Hostages may range from high profile business individuals or their loved ones or employees to a small child snatched in a custody dispute.

Kidnappers may fall into many varying categories and their motivations may be blurred by emotions, politics or finance.  Whatever the case, it is critical that the correct techniques are employed by captives and those conducting negotiations in order to guarantee the safe return of the kidnapped individual.
